2008 Scholarship Awards Program

Purpose of Awards

The PFLAG-Atlanta Scholarship Awards are designed to recognize outstanding lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans-gender (LGBT) individuals; encourage continuing education for self-identified LGBT individuals; and foster a positive image of LGBT people in society.

Eligibility

Applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:

Identify openly as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or trans-gender;

bullet

Demonstrate a history of LGBT or other community service or activism;

bullet

Be a current Georgia resident or use the scholarship to attend school in Georgia;

bullet

Hold the equivalent of a B- or higher cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) for the past 4 semesters;

bullet

Mail the completed application and all supporting materials for postmark on or before March 31, 2008.

Terms

Awards are for the 2008-2009 academic year only.

In order to receive an award, recipients must be accepted and enrolled in a post-secondary degree or certificate program for full or part-time attendance as defined by the institution;

bullet

Prior recipients may apply each year that they are eligible.

Attendance at the PFLAG-Atlanta Scholarship Awards Ceremony, usually held in June, is required to receive a scholarship; exceptions require prior board approval.  In addition, recipients are expected to sign photo and press releases for public announcements about the program.

Application Deadline

Application, essay questions, transcripts, letters of recommendation, and all other required supporting materials must be submitted directly to the PFLAG-Atlanta Scholarship Program, P.O. Box 450393, Atlanta, Georgia, 31145-0393, and postmarked on or before March 31, 2008.

 

Criteria for Evaluating Applications

Applications will be evaluated using the following criteria, listed below in order of importance:

1.       A demonstrated history of LGBT or other community service or activism, and/or extracurricular activities;

2.       Academic achievement;

3.       Financial need;

4.       Identification of and potential to achieve career goals.

Finalists may be invited to participate in a personal interview.

 or financial aid office, or the PFLAG-Atlanta Scholarship Program.
Regular mail application requests must be made by March 1st, 2008.
