Jan 15th – 3rd Sunday Meeting - Kathy Colbenson of CHRIS Kids
Kathy Colbenson is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Chief Executive Officer of CHRIS Kids. In 1987 Kathy became the CEO of CHRIS Kids. At that time, the agency had a capacity of 30, an annual operating budget of $402,000 and operated four group homes and an independent living program for abused and neglected children with severe emotional disturbance who were in the foster care of juvenile justice systems. The mission of CHRIS Kids is to heal children, strengthen families and build community and the name is an acronym for its values: Creativity, Honor, Respect, Integrity and Safety. Kathy’s leadership has resulted in numerous best-practice awards and accolades for CHRIS Kids throughout the State of Georgia. She has formed dozens of partnerships to improve the lives of children, youth and families and increased the capacity of the organization to fulfill its mission. Kathy is an active participant in the Kiwanis Club, Vistage, and Leadership Atlanta. The best part of her job is, “unlocking potential.”
Today CHRIS Kids offers a values-driven Family of Services that provides flexible, strength-based, services, including a counseling center, group homes, an apartment complex and a host of in-home services that are designed to help children, youth and families unlock their potential for self sufficiency and good citizenship. The organization’s budget is $10,000,000 and it employs over 165 talented and committed people. In 2011, CHRIS Kids provided help to over 1,500 children and families with comprehensive services that reflect Kathy’s belief in collaboration, good stewardship and the philosophy that treatment should translate into successful functioning in the real world. This year, CHRIS Kids celebrated 30 years and over 15,000 transformed lives and won the coveted 2011 Managing for Excellence Award from the Community Foundation of Greater Atlanta.

What can I expect at a PFLAG meeting?
No one who attends a meeting is ever made to feel that he or she must speak. We all know the value of quiet listening. And no one who does speak is expected to reveal more than he or she feels comfortable with. But in the warm and supportive atmosphere many newcomers find that they are able to put troubling thoughts and fears into words for the first time and receive reassurance, guidance and facts. All conversations are considered confidential and are not discussed beyond the room. PFLAG literature is available as you come in and our free book and video library is open. Most meetings begin with a speaker or program. We break for refreshments, then meet for an hour of support in small groups. We generally end our meeting with a casual invitation to all interested parties to share dinner with us at a local restaurant.
